Trouble Talking with Invisalign – Can an Orthodontist Help?

When patients learn about the orthodontic options available to them, they often get excited about Invisalign. This is no surprise as Invisalign aligners are comfortable and can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

With Invisalign, you don’t have to worry about metal brackets and wires hurting your mouth. You can go about your daily life while discreetly straightening your teeth and achieving the smile of your dreams.

While Invisalign is an excellent orthodontic treatment for many teens and adults that visit our office, it is not perfect and does come with some drawbacks. Recently, some Invisalign patients have discovered they have trouble talking with Invisalign aligners in their mouth.

Since Invisalign aligners are made of thin plastic, if you face any issues with talking, they should be very minor and only last a short period of time. If you notice a minor lisp, know that only you’ll be able to hear it and it will fade away on its own once your tongue gets used to the aligners being in your mouth.

Dr. Sims can help you out if your talking challenges do not go away naturally on their own. He can tell you which words to practice pronouncing. You may need to read books out loud or practice around friends and family members you trust. Rest assured your talking issues will get resolved.
