Invisalign is essentially invisible braces. They are removable clear aligners that are molded to shape your mouth and gradually straighten teeth. Invisalign does not contain brackets or wires, and there are no restrictions like those that come with metal braces. For many adults or kids who do not want the inconvenience of metal braces, Invisalign is a wonderful treatment option because they can be removed for eating, drinking and playing sports.
The aligners that are placed in the mouth are made from a thin flexible plastic called SmartTrack, created individually for Invisalign treatment. Since the plastic aligners are so thin this makes any speech affects very minor and temporary. When the aligners are first place, you may notice a slight lisp when speaking. For some patients, it may be difficult to create ‘S’ or ‘Th” sounds at first. However, after a few days, once your tongue is able to adjust to having your aligners in your mouth, any speaking difficulties should disappear.
In the event you do experience a slight speech impediment with Invisalign treatment and it does not disappear with time, there are a few practices that can help. When speaking, make sure to enunciate every word properly. It may help to try talking aloud alone while in front of a mirror until the slight lisp is corrected. You can also practice reading aloud to yourself or people that you feel comfortable with.
Over 5 million people, and more than 1 million teens have used Invisalign clear aligners to transform their smiles. Even celebrities have reported that they have used Invisalign in the past such as, Oprah Winfrey, Keira Knightley, Kate Middleton, Tom Cruise and Justin Bieber. There should be no reason to be afraid that Invisalign will affect your speech if Hollywood’s most seen on TV have experienced successful Invisalign results!
