Invisalign has been around since 1997. It’s the preferred way to straighten teeth for teens and adults from all across the country. Whether you’d like to resolve an underbite, overbite, crossbite, spacing, crowding, or any other malocclusion, Invisalign may be a great option. Let’s take a closer look at how Invisalign works and why it’s so important to keep these clear, plastic aligners for at least 22 hours per day.
How Invisalign Works
Through a series of aligners, Invisalign can gradually move your teeth into their optimal positions. While treatment time will depend on your unique case, you can expect it to take anywhere from six to 24 months.
Since Invisalign’s aligners are made of a clear plastic, they’re virtually invisible to the naked eye. This means you can straighten your teeth in a discreet manner. Most people won’t know you’re wearing aligners unless they’re very close to you or you tell them.
To begin the treatment, you’ll visit Dr. Sims for an initial consultation. He’ll take a close look at your orthodontic needs and determine whether you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. In the event you are, Dr. Sims will use a special scanner to design precise 3D images of your teeth. Then, he’ll map out a treatment plan, which will include the exact movements of your teeth and the longevity of your treatment.
Once you receive your aligners, you’ll be able to wear them for at least 22 hours per day. Fortunately, you can take them out every time you eat, drink, brush, and floss. It’s essential that you put them in as soon as you’re done enjoying a meal or drink or caring for your teeth.
If you don’t wear your aligners for three days or a weekend because you’re traveling and you forgot them or you simply don’t feel like it, your treatment may take longer than expected. This is particularly true if you get in the habit of forgetting your aligners.
As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth will slowly but surely shift into their proper positions. Dr. Sims will likely suggest that you wear a new set of aligners every week and visit our office for checkups about every six weeks. While wearing your aligners for most of the day may be a challenge at first, it’s vital to the success of your treatment plan. Most patients report that after a few weeks of doing so, it becomes second nature.
Retainers After Invisalign Treatment
After your treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear a retainer. This way your teeth will remain in their proper positions. If you fail to do so, your teeth may return to their original positions. Removable retainers are a good option if you want the cleaning process to be easier. However, if you’re worried you won’t wear your retainers, a fixed retainer might be a better choice. A retainer will ensure your hard work pays off and your smile lasts for years to come.
