Orthodontist Offers Rapid Palate Expander (RPE) to Patients
Palate expanders are designed to widen a patient’s mouth. They are often recommended when a patient has crowded teeth or a crossbite. Palate expanders work by splitting the upper jaw with every turn. Once they are attached to the upper molars, they gradually push the upper jaw to expand. In order to tighten palate expanders, patients will need to use a key on a daily basis.
Although tightening palate expanders can be painful for patients at first, they eventually get used to it and find the process to be more comfortable over time. Palate expanders are usually placed on elementary school patients and make having braces in middle school or high school easy.
What to Expect From a Palate Expander
If your child receives a palate expander, you may find that they eat or speak differently until they become accustomed to wearing the device. Fortunately, this eventually fade and they will be able to eat and speak normally again.
Your child may also experience a bit of pressure or soreness for a few minutes once the key is turned. If you notice the development of a gap between their front teeth, you should know that their expander is working and their upper jaw is becoming wider. When your child completes their orthodontic treatment, their permanent teeth will be aligned beautifully. We are often asked if health or dental insurance plans cover a Rapid Palate Expander (RPE). The only way we will know if your insurance covers any orthodontic appliance is to run the insurance. Contact us today to see if your insurance covers any of the costs of a palate expander. Unfortunately, much like with your dermatologist’s office, insurance companies often deem orthodontic treatments cosmetic and not necessary. That said, we will still be more than happy to run your insurance card.
