The purpose of a quad helix expander is to expand the upper jaw. This appliance attaches to the upper molar and may also be an effective way to stop thumb and finger sucking. Here at Sims Orthodontics, we frequently recommend quad helix expanders.
If a patient receives one, they can expect to feel sore for about 3 to 7 days. During this time, we encourage them to brush their tongue and rinse with salt water. This will assist the tongue in adapting to the quad helix expander.
As soon as the expander gets placed, a patient may find speech to be difficult. Fortunately, this is only temporary as their speech will return to normal after a day or two. If possible, a patient with a quad helix expander should avoid hard and sticky foods such as peanut butter and meats like steak for the duration of their treatment.
In most cases, this type of expander is worn for 3 to 6 months. In the event a patient notices their quad helix expander cutting their tongue, they should contact our office as soon as possible. While the expander may bother your tongue at first, this should go away and tongue cutting should not occur. We can evaluate your mouth and expander to determine what the issue is and help you avoid this painful tongue cutting.
