After you’re done with braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer. By doing so, you’ll be able to maintain your new and improved smile. If you fail to wear a retainer as directed by your orthodontist, you can expect your teeth to slowly but surely shift to their original position.
While retainers are durable, there’s no guarantee that they’ll last forever. In fact, you’ll likely need to replace your retainer at some point in time. Here are some signs that you need a replacement retainer.
Small Cracks: If you notice cracks on your retainer, the material has begun to break down. Unless you get a new one, these cracks will increase in size and your retainer will no longer have the structural integrity to do its job well.
Looseness: Your retainer should feel tight in your mouth. If it feels loose at any point in time, you need a replacement. A loose retainer won’t be able to keep your teeth in place.
Warped: In the unfortunate event your retainer gets warped because someone cleaned it with hot water or threw it in the dishwasher, you’ll be due for a replacement. A warped retainer won’t fit properly in your mouth and become useless.
Calcium Build Up: No matter how well you take care of your retainer, calcium is bound to build up over time. Since it may discourage you from wearing it, it’s wise to get a replacement.
Lost: If you lead an active life and travel often, you may lose your retainer eventually. Be sure to replace it if you can’t find it after a day or two.
