Have you just recently finished your Invisalign treatment or had Invisalign in the past? You may be wondering, are second Invisalign treatments common? It depends! Second Invisalign treatments are usually called “refinement.” This typically happens right after you’ve finished the initial stage of treatment and you or your orthodontist still aren’t completely satisfied with the results. Sometimes, it is necessary to move a specific problem tooth or perfect the smile a little more. This is definitely worth it to do, as it’s usually included in the overall cost of your Invisalign treatment. The refinement includes an additional number of trays to wear until you are fully satisfied with the look of your smile! This would be the same thing as if your orthodontist told you you should be done with braces by a certain time, but realize you need to wear them a little longer to make your teeth look perfect.
After you complete your Invisalign treatment, you will be asked to wear a retainer. Typically, retainers are only worn at night time, to keep your teeth in position and prevent any shifting or moving from happening after completing your treatment. By wearing your retainer, you can keep your teeth from shifting back to their original positions or “relapsing.” If you do not commit to wearing your retainer, there is the possibility for your teeth to relapse and shift or move back.
If this happens, a second Invisalign treatment may be necessary to correct and move the teeth back into their desired position.
The best way to prevent needing Invisalign a second time is by wearing your retainer every night and visiting the dentist regularly for checkups. Your dentist will monitor your teeth and be able to let you know if any shifting or movement has happened.
