Braces are an orthodontic device intended to correct any misaligned teeth, or abnormal bites such as an overbites, underbites, etc. They gradually move the teeth over time into their desired position. Some individuals may have braces on longer than others depending on the severity of the corrections that may need to be made.
Types of braces:
- Metal Braces — Braces made of high-grade stainless steel, which are the most common type of braces that you see.
- Ceramic Braces — Braces made of clear, brackets that are especially appealing for individuals who may need braces, but want the benefits of a more discreet look.
- Gold Braces — Braces made of stainless steel coated with 24-karat gold.
- Invisalign — A different type of “braces” that consist of clear aligners, which are removable and for patients of all ages.
Getting Your Braces:
Depending on the type of braces that you choose, they may feel make your mouth very different when they first are put on. This is especially true with metal braces, ceramic braces and gold braces since the brackets are a little bit thicker than teeth. It may feel as though the brackets are “sticking out” further and the lips may feel as though they appear bigger. However, this doesn’t typically make the lips physically bigger— Not anything like Botox injections would!
For some patients, the lips may also appear swollen because of the new brackets rubbing against them. The brackets can feel rough to the lips at first and may cause small cuts or sore spots. To prevent any irritation from the brackets, it is best to use some orthodontic wax. The orthodontic wax forms a smooth barrier between the brackets and lips and can relive any discomfort that may occur. After the lips and mouth become accustomed to the new braces, things should begin to feel a bit more normal and feel as though nothing is even there.
