Beef jerky is a tasty and convenient snack option. It is a lean meat that has been removed of fat, cut into strips, and dried. Here at Sims Orthodontics, we’ve had a number of beef jerky lovers ask us whether they can continue eating this snack with braces.
Unfortunately, we do not recommend eating beef jerky while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Beef jerky is a very tough meat that can easily loosen the wires and brackets on your braces. If you’d like to ensure your treatment goes as planned and get your braces off as soon as possible, it is in your best interest to stay away from beef jerky.
Dr. Sims recommends replacing beef jerky with softer meats. Lunch meats, meatloaf, tender chicken, and seafood are all good options. Consider preparing meatloaf, chicken, and seafood in advance and keeping these foods in a Tupperware container so that you can easily snack on them whenever you’d like.
Undergoing orthodontic treatment takes a great deal of time, energy, and money. That’s why, it’s important to adhere to the food restrictions that Dr. Sims will likely tell you about when you get your braces on. Once you get your braces off, you can eat all the beef jerky your heart desires!
