The day our patients complete a traditional metal braces or Invisalign treatment plan is often one of the happiest days of their lives. They are left with straight teeth and an attractive smile that they can’t wait to show off to the world. Recently, we’ve have had many patients ask us why their lips are so sensitive after braces or Invisalign.
Getting your traditional metal braces or Invisalign aligners off is a bit like getting them on. Going from having metal or clear aligners (Invisalign) in your mouth every day to nothing is a big changes. Therefore, your teeth and lips may experience some sensitivity. Fortunately, these sensations are not permanent and tend to fade quickly.
If you notice that you are lips or teeth are sensitive for more than a week or so, we encourage you to visit our office. We can determine whether there are any issues and provide you with tips on how to ease the sensitivity.
Typically, patients with sensitive lips find relief after using a petroleum lip product such as Vaseline, drinking plenty of water, and maintaining optimal oral hygiene. They should refrain from lip products with chemical or harsh ingredients, and peeling or biting flaky skin.
