One of the major reasons patients at Sims Orthodontics are hesitant about receiving metal braces is because they are worried that they won’t be able to sleep well at night. Many of them have asked Dr. Sims and the rest of our team whether it’s possible to get a good night’s rest with metals and wires in their mouths. The answer is “absolutely!”
When you first get your braces and your mouth is still getting used to them, we recommend using some dental wax. Lay down on your bed and position your body as if you are about to go to sleep. Then, close your eyes and feel which parts of your braces feel uncomfortable or press against your cheek.
These are the parts that you’ll want to generously apply some dental wax on. Dental wax is completely non-toxic and perfectly safe to sleep with. We also recommend investing in the softest pillow you can find as a firm pillow can apply more pressure to your braces. With a soft pillow, your head can comfortably sink in and evenly distribute the weight, allowing for less pressure and discomfort.
If you have dry mouth, you should drink a large glass of water before you go to bed to hydrate your mouth. Also, if you grind your teeth at night, let Dr. Sims know as he may prescribe a mouthguard to help you stop this habit, which is particularly bad when you have braces in your mouth. By following these tips, you are sure to sleep well while straightening your teeth and making strides towards the smile of your dreams.
