After you get your braces removed, you will be left with straight teeth and a beautiful smile. If you’d like to ensure your new and improved smile lasts for years to come, wearing a retainer will be essential. A retainer is an appliance designed to hold your teeth in their positions and prevent relapse.
If you don’t wear your retainer as instructed by your orthodontist, your teeth may slowly but surely move back into their original positions. This would be a real a shame considering how much time, money, and energy you’ve put into your orthodontic treatment. Our great friend and Midlothian, VA Dentist Dr. Brent Rusnak has seen cases in which children don’t wear their retainer and it causes relapse or other oral health concerns.
Many of our patients ask Dr. Sims whether they have to wear their retainers all day. They are relieved to learn that in most cases, retainers only need to be worn all day for the first three months after braces come off. Once you’ve worn your retainers all day for 3 months, you’ll likely be permitted to only wear them at night.
If you’re concerned that you won’t be disciplined enough to wear your retainer as frequently as your orthodontist recommends, a permanent retainer may be a good option. You won’t be able to remove it and can ensure that your teeth will stay straight and healthy after you’ve completed your braces treatment.
