Invisalign vs Braces for an 11 Year Old

If your child is 11 and in need of orthodontic treatment, you may be wondering whether they should get Invisalign or braces. The truth is that every child is different so there’s not one hard answer to this question. It all depends on your child’s current teeth and mouth as well as their lifestyle, personality, and preferences.

If your child is feeling self-conscious about undergoing orthodontic treatment, they may be better off with Invisalign since Invisalign aligners are clear and virtually invisible to the naked eye. However, if your child is excited about getting braces and changing the colors of their bands, they may be happy with traditional metal braces.

It’s also important to consider how responsible your child is. If you don’t trust them to wear their Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours each day and are concerned they’ll remove them more than they should, Invisalign is a risky option. They are likely more suited for braces that cannot be removed.

Your child’s lifestyle is also important to consider. If they are always busy with school, homework, sports, and extracurricular activities, they may not have the time to come to our office every few weeks to get an adjustment that is necessary with metal braces. If this is the case, they may find that Invisalign is easier to fit into their busy schedule.

Of course, it also comes down to the type of orthodontic issue your child is trying to resolve. Sometimes, metal braces are necessary even if Invisalign is preferred. Dr. Sims can inform you of which treatment is right for your child.
