An “orthodontist” is a dental specialist who is specifically trained in addressing, preventing and correcting mal-positioned teeth and jaws and misaligned occlusion (bite patterns). An orthodontist attends four years of dental school prior to their two to three year accredited orthodontics residency program, which is a total of about six to seven years of professional school. Frankly, because of the extensive years of education, orthodontists tend to be a much better fit to administer Invisalign treatment.
To simply put it, an orthodontist has had a much more extensive training of orthodontic issues rather than a general dentist with jaw alignment and the teeth. While it is true that some dentists offer Invisalign, the orthodontist is much better suited for evaluating and treating cases for Invisalign. Many times the Invisalign cases may be complex and the orthodontist has the knowledge to maneuver teeth in ways that the general dentist may not. Whether it be that a certain front tooth is not moving properly or just plain stubborn, the orthodontist has had extensive training to decide what treatment options would work best for this Invisalign case.
Additionally, if following Invisalign treatment, you may need other orthodontic work; you can have it done all in one “house” at the same orthodontist’s office where you completed your Invisalign. In this way, you as the patient are familiar with the orthodontist and the orthodontist is already familiar with your case already. With this being said, the orthodontist will know which treatment options would work best for you because they already know how your teeth and jaws function together.
