Is It Safe to Get Braces or Invisalign During Menopause?

Here at Sims Orthodontics, we believe it’s never too late for patients to achieve straight teeth and beautiful, healthy smiles. While we do treat many children and teens, we also design customized orthodontic treatment plans for older men and women.

Some of the older women who visit us for orthodontic treatment ask us whether it’s safe for them to undergo braces or Invisalign while they are going through menopause. The answer to this question is absolutely! While orthodontic treatment during menopause is safe, it requires women to be extra vigilant about their oral health.

This is because the hormonal fluctuations during menopause are known to cause oral health problems such as dry mouth syndrome, which may increase a woman’s risk of cavities. We encourage patients who are going through menopause to make their oral hygiene a top priority, especially if they are wearing braces or Invisalign aligners. Fortunately, this is not an issue for most women.

Women going through menopause must brush and floss their teeth thoroughly on a daily basis. Since this is typically easier to do with Invisalign clear aligner that are removable, we usually recommend Invisalign over traditional metal braces to these women. Invisalign aligners are also more comfortable and discreet.
