Braces are becoming more and more common among younger aged kids. You may have peers in your class and the first thing you notice is the fact that they have metal braces. You may find yourself thinking ‘ Wow, everyone has these!’ This is typically because the age range of 11 to 15 years old is an ideal time for braces. So if it has come your time to get your braces and you aren’t too sure what to expect, do not worry! Life with braces is a change, but it is not impossible!
Initially:
When you get your braces put on at first, your teeth, gums or even lips may feel sore for a couple of days. This is because your mouth is not used to the added metal that is on the teeth. If you notice any rough spots or cuts on the cheeks, be sure to use orthodontic wax and place it over the braces in these areas to keep from creating further damage to the cheeks. Additionally, your teeth may feel tight from pressure caused by the wire that goes through each bracket on your braces. However, after a couple days, usually no longer than two weeks, should any discomfort subside.
What to Be Mindful Of:
With braces come a few restrictions with certain foods. It’s important to know that these restrictions aren’t forever either, only while you have your braces on. This is to ensure that your braces will remain in tact and function properly. The last thing you want is a broken bracket sending you on an emergency trip to the orthodontist!
So, please be careful to avoid the following foods:
- Anything that is hard – ice, hard candies or nuts
- Anything that is chewy – gummy candies, fruit snacks or licorice
- Anything that is sticky – caramel, taffy, etc.
Think Positively:
If you do as instructed by the orthodontist and take care of your braces you should the least amount of troubles with your braces so be sure to do so. If things seem to be frustrating with your braces, simply remind yourself from time to time that your braces aren’t forever and once you get them off you’ll have that smile you have always dreamed of!
