My oldest patient is 86 years old. Her mother lived past 100, and she figured she had a good 20 years left to enjoy a smile she’d always wanted to fix. So she came in, we talked about her options, and she started treatment.
I love that story because it says everything I want adults in Pensacola to understand about orthodontic care. There is no age cutoff. There is no point at which it’s too late. If your teeth and gums are healthy enough to support treatment, we can help you. Whether you’re 25, 45, 65, or beyond.
I’m Dr. Clay Sims, a board-certified orthodontist in Pensacola. A significant portion of my practice is adults, and it’s a part of my work I genuinely enjoy. Adult patients tend to be motivated, consistent, and clear about what they want. They’ve often been thinking about this for years. And Invisalign in particular has opened doors for a lot of people who would never have considered traditional braces.
Why So Many Adults Are Getting Orthodontic Treatment Now
Twenty years ago, seeing an adult in braces was uncommon enough to notice. Today it’s routine, and there are real reasons for that shift.
Invisalign changed the conversation entirely. The idea of wearing clear, removable aligners that most people won’t even notice is a very different proposition from metal brackets and wires. A lot of adults who dismissed orthodontics years ago took another look once Invisalign became widely available and more affordable.
Life also changes. Teeth shift as we get older. Adults who had braces as teenagers and didn’t wear their retainers consistently often find their teeth have moved back. Others never had the opportunity to get treatment growing up and are in a position now to finally do it. Some are approaching a milestone, a wedding, a big birthday, a career change, and decide the time is right.
Whatever brings someone in, I’ve heard almost every version of it. And the result is always the same: patients who finish treatment wish they had done it sooner.
What’s Different About Adult Orthodontic Treatment
Adult treatment is not identical to treating a teenager. Here’s what’s worth knowing.
Teeth move at the same rate. Adults sometimes worry that their teeth won’t move as effectively as a younger person’s. That’s not true. Teeth move in response to sustained pressure regardless of age. Treatment may be planned differently for an adult, but the mechanics work the same.
Bone density matters more. Adults have denser bone than growing children, which means treatment can sometimes take a little longer for certain movements. It also means we pay close attention to bone and gum health before and during treatment. A healthy foundation is essential for good orthodontic outcomes at any age.
Gum and dental health come first. Before starting orthodontic treatment, I want to make sure your teeth are current on cleanings and that there are no active cavities or significant gum issues. Moving teeth in a mouth that needs dental work first creates problems. Most of the time this just means being current with your regular dentist, which most adults already are.
The results last. One of the things I tell adult patients is that their teeth are done growing. When we finish treatment and you wear your retainer consistently, the result tends to stay put in a way that’s actually more predictable than treating a growing teenager whose jaw is still changing. Adults who are diligent about retainer wear keep their results for life.
Why Adults Tend to Do Really Well with Invisalign
I’ve been a Diamond Invisalign Provider for years, which means I treat a high volume of Invisalign cases annually. Adult patients are consistently some of my best Invisalign patients and here’s why.
Compliance is everything with Invisalign. The aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out to eat, brush, and floss. That’s it. Adults who decide to do Invisalign are typically highly motivated and they follow through. Teenagers vary. Adults almost always wear them as directed.
The lifestyle fit is also genuinely better for most working adults. You can take the aligners out for an important meeting, a dinner, a wedding, a job interview. Nobody has to know you’re in treatment if you don’t want them to. For professionals and anyone who is conscious about their appearance during treatment, that flexibility matters.
Oral hygiene is easier too. There are no brackets to brush around, no wires to thread floss through. Your hygiene routine stays the same. For adults who are already attentive to their dental health, this is a real advantage.
Common Reasons Adults Come In
Teeth that have shifted since teenage braces. This is probably the most common situation I see in adult patients. They had braces as a kid, didn’t wear their retainer long enough, and over the years the teeth gradually moved back. Treatment the second time around is often shorter than the first because we’re dealing with less overall movement. We also talk about long-term retainer wear from the start so it doesn’t happen again.
A smile they never got to fix growing up. Plenty of adults simply never had orthodontic treatment when they were young. Maybe the timing wasn’t right, the finances weren’t there, or it just wasn’t a priority for their family. Now they’re in a different place in life and ready to do it for themselves.
Bite issues causing real problems. Not all adult orthodontic treatment is cosmetic. Overbites, underbites, crossbites, and crowding can contribute to jaw discomfort, uneven tooth wear, and difficulty chewing. Fixing the underlying bite issue addresses the symptom and protects the teeth long term.
Preparing for other dental work. Sometimes a dentist recommends orthodontic treatment before placing implants, crowns, or bridgework. Getting the teeth aligned first means the restorative work goes in correctly and lasts longer. We coordinate with referring dentists regularly for these cases.
A milestone on the horizon. Engagements, milestone birthdays, reunions, career changes. People often have a specific reason they decide now is the time. Whatever it is, I’m not here to question the motivation. If you want a better smile and your mouth is healthy enough to support treatment, let’s talk.
“Is It Too Late For Me?”
Almost certainly not. The question I ask is whether your teeth and gums are in good enough health to support treatment, not how old you are. A healthy 60-year-old is a better orthodontic candidate than a 25-year-old with untreated gum disease.
The one situation where age genuinely changes the conversation is when significant bone loss from periodontal disease is present. In those cases, we work closely with a periodontist to make sure the foundation is stable before moving teeth. It doesn’t necessarily mean treatment isn’t possible, it just means we need to be thoughtful about sequencing.
For the vast majority of adults who ask me this question, the answer is yes, we can treat you, and here are your options.
What Does Adult Treatment Cost?
Adult orthodontic treatment at Sims Orthodontics follows the same pricing structure as treatment for younger patients. Most full treatment cases run between $6,000 and $7,500 before insurance and discounts. Shorter limited cases start lower. Insurance benefits apply to adult treatment as well. Many people don’t realize that adult orthodontics is often covered up to the same lifetime maximum as treatment for children.
We offer 0% interest in-house financing with down payments and monthly payments structured to fit your budget. Most adult patients end up well under $200 a month once insurance applies.

One More Thing About Getting Started
A lot of adults put this off for years because they assume it’ll be painful, expensive, or disruptive to their daily life. I want to address all three of those directly.
Getting braces put on does not hurt. I give patients this analogy: it’s like the first day of a new workout routine. Your teeth will be sore for a few days as they start to respond to the pressure. Soft foods, ice cream, yogurt, mac and cheese, you’ll get through it. But the actual process of bonding brackets or fitting aligners is painless. There’s no shot, no drilling, nothing to dread. A lot of adults are surprised by how easy the first appointment is.
It won’t be as disruptive as you think. Invisalign in particular fits into adult life very naturally. Even traditional braces are a minor adjustment after the first week or two. Millions of adults are in orthodontic treatment right now and going about their normal lives.
And the cost, once insurance and financing are factored in, is much more manageable than most people assume before they come in. That’s exactly why the first appointment is free and why we go over everything transparently before you decide anything.
I’ll leave you with this. One of the most memorable moments in my career was taking braces off a 45-year-old man who had wanted to fix his smile his whole adult life. When he looked in the mirror he started crying. Completely overwhelmed. Not embarrassed about it at all. Just genuinely emotional about something he’d waited decades for. I’ve thought about that moment a lot over the years. The only thing I’d change about his story is that he didn’t have to wait so long to start.
Protecting Your Result: The Peace of Mind Retainer Plan
One of the biggest concerns I hear from adult patients is “what if my teeth shift back?” It’s a fair concern. Relapse, meaning teeth gradually moving back toward their original position, is the main reason adults in their 40s and 50s come to us for touch-up or express Invisalign treatment. Almost always it traces back to the same thing: they stopped wearing their retainer years ago and life got in the way.
We built our Peace of Mind Retainer Plan specifically to solve this problem.
Here’s how it works. When you finish treatment, we digitally scan your teeth and store your final smile on the cloud using Invisalign’s Vivera technology. That becomes your permanent record, the smile we worked to create, preserved digitally. You enroll in the plan for a one-time fee of $680, which includes your first set of Vivera retainers. After that, for the next five years, replacement retainers cost just $30 each.
No office visits. No impressions. If you lose, break, or wear out a retainer, you call us, we pull up your stored smile, and your new retainer is ready in five to seven days. That’s a savings of over $200 on every replacement retainer compared to the standard cost.
About 500 patients a year enroll in this program, current patients finishing treatment, past patients who want the protection going forward, and adults starting treatment who want peace of mind built in from day one. We can also add the enrollment fee to the end of your treatment contract so there’s no extra out-of-pocket cost upfront.
Retainers are the most underrated part of orthodontic treatment. The teeth we straighten stay straight when the retainer is worn. The Peace of Mind plan removes every excuse for not replacing a lost or broken one quickly, and it’s the single biggest reason our patients keep their results long term.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults really get braces or Invisalign? Absolutely. Adults make up a significant portion of orthodontic patients today. There is no upper age limit for treatment as long as your teeth and gums are healthy enough to support it.
Is it too late to fix my teeth if I’m in my 40s or 50s? No. We treat patients across a wide range of ages including well into their 50s, 60s, and beyond. The 86-year-old patient I mentioned at the top of this post is a real example. Age is not the limiting factor. Dental and gum health is.
Does orthodontic insurance cover adults? Many plans do cover adult orthodontics up to the same lifetime maximum as treatment for children. It varies by plan. We run a complimentary benefits check at your first appointment so you know exactly what your insurance covers before making any decisions.
Is Invisalign better than braces for adults? For most adults, Invisalign is a great fit because of the discretion, comfort, and lifestyle flexibility it offers. Whether it’s the right choice depends on your specific case. Some bite issues and more complex movements are handled more precisely with traditional braces. We’ll give you an honest recommendation at your consultation. See our full comparison post on braces vs. Invisalign for more detail.
Will my teeth shift again after treatment? They can if you don’t wear your retainer consistently. This is the number one reason adults seek retreatment. They had braces years ago, stopped wearing their retainer, and the teeth gradually moved back. From day one of treatment we talk about long-term retainer wear as part of protecting your result. We also offer our Peace of Mind Retainer Plan, which stores your final smile digitally and lets you replace lost or broken retainers for just $30 for five years after treatment. It’s the most effective thing we’ve done to help patients keep their results long term.
What is the Peace of Mind Retainer Plan? It’s a retainer replacement program we offer that stores your final smile digitally using Invisalign’s Vivera technology. You enroll once for $680, which includes your first set of retainers. For the next five years, replacement Vivera retainers are just $30 each, a savings of over $200 per retainer compared to standard replacement cost. If you need a new one, you call us and it’s ready in five to seven days with no office visit or impressions required.
How long does adult orthodontic treatment take? It depends on your case. Simple limited cases can be done in a few months. Average full treatment runs 12 to 18 months, similar to treatment for teens. Some complex cases take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline at your consultation.
Does getting braces hurt? Getting braces placed doesn’t hurt. Your teeth will be sore for a few days after placement and after each adjustment as they respond to the pressure. Think of it like the muscle soreness after a workout. Soft foods help during those days. Invisalign patients experience similar mild discomfort when switching to a new set of aligners. It’s very manageable.
